Toxic Cosmetics Getting Under the Skin of Concerned Investors

Health-conscious investors and consumers are starting to demand cosmetic companies report and ban toxic ingredients.

SocialFunds.com -- As new studies expose the high number of toxic ingredients in personal care products and cosmetics, many consumers are asking just how safe are the products they use every day. Meanwhile, many investors are asking how safe from liability and market changes are the companies that manufacture and sell these products.

"The ground is shifting for manufacturers across all industries, including personal care," stated Noran Eid, an analyst at Innovest Strategic Value Advisors. "Investors should be aware of these issues when assessing long-term competitiveness and profitability."

Richard Liroff of the Investor Environmental Health Network (IEHN) agreed: "the safer cosmetics issue is part of larger safer chemicals policy issue.

MySpace, Facebook Pages Called Key to Dispute Over Insurance Coverage ...

Litigation over an insurer's refusal to pay health benefits for anorexia or bulimia may turn on what is revealed from the alleged sufferers' e-mails and postings on the social networking sites MySpace and Facebook.

The plaintiffs are suing in federal court in Newark, N.J., on behalf of their minor children, who have been denied benefits by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey.

Horizon claims that the children's online writings, as well as journal and diary entries, could shed light on the causes of the disorders, which determines the insurer's responsibility for payment. New Jersey law requires coverage of mental illness only if it is biologically based.

Horizon claims the eating problems are not biologically based and that the writings could point to emotional causes.

Five Students Pursue Research Careers with Gilliam Fellowships

Silvia Caballero, Shoa Clarke, Alejandra Figueroa-Clarevega, Daniel Gilmer, and Betty Mbom are not your average twenty-somethings. Their paths through life have already taken them to Africa and Central and South America; to disaster relief efforts, clinics, and leading research labs. They have helped create support networks for minority students, studied tropical diseases at the Pan-American Health Organization, and investigated how HIV suppresses the immune system. Along the way, they have each developed a common passion: a desire to improve their world through science.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has selected these five young scientists as recipients of this year's Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Study. The competitive fellowships, offered to outstanding students from groups underrepresented in the sciences or from disadvantaged backgrounds, provide full support for up to five years of study toward a Ph.D.

FDA: Contaminated Pet Food Caused Illnesses, Deaths

FDA intents to take enforcement action against companies marketing unapproved injectable colchicine, a drug used to treat gout.Colchicine is a highly toxic drug that can easily be administered in excessive doses, especially when given intravenously. There is a narrow margin between an effective dose of the drug and a toxic dose that can result in serious health risks, including death. The FDA is aware of 50 reports of adverse events associated with the use of intravenous colchicine, including 23 deaths. Potentially fatal effects include low blood cell counts, cardiac events, and organ failure."Today's action supports our ongoing efforts to end the marketing of unapproved drugs with serious health risks," said Janet Woodcock, M.D., FDA's deputy commissioner for scientific and medical programs, chief medical officer, and acting director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).
